Incline Platform Lifts

WhatIstheElevateGlide?

The Elevate Glide is an incline platform lift — sometimes called an incline platform stairlift — that travels along a rail fixed directly to an existing staircase using a rack and pinion drive system. Unlike a conventional stairlift, which seats the user on a small fold-down chair, the Glide carries the user on a platform together with their wheelchair or mobility aid. No transfer out of the wheelchair is required.

The Glide is suitable for both straight and curved staircases — the rail is custom-fabricated to follow the exact profile of the staircase it is fitted to, with a minimum rail length of 500mm and a maximum of 35 metres, covering everything from a short domestic staircase to a long commercial flight.

Platform Lift for Home UK

WhatIsaPlatformLiftfortheHome?

A platform lift for home use is any powered lift that helps a wheelchair user, ambulant user, or anyone with reduced mobility move between levels without using the stairs. In the UK, home platform lifts generally fall into three categories: step lifts for a single step or shallow rise, incline platform lifts that travel along an existing staircase, and through-floor home lifts for full floor-to-floor access. You can compare all of them on our wheelchair lifts page.

Which type of home platform lift suits you depends on the size of the level change, whether it needs to go indoors or outdoors, and your budget. This guide outlines what each option costs, who it suits, and how to get a free, no-obligation quote from a vetted UK installer.

How It Works

HowtheElevateGlideWorks

The platform folds flat against the wall or stair when not in use — 300mm clearance on leg mount, 245mm on wall mount

  1. The user unfolds the platform and boards with their wheelchair or mobility aid

  2. The arm and safety barrier are lowered into position

  3. The user operates the controls and the platform travels along the rail via the rack and pinion drive

  4. The anti-jamming safety switch and brake system continuously monitor the journey

  5. The platform arrives at the top or bottom landing and the user exits

Lift Access Specialist

What's the cheapest platform lift for a home in the UK?

A step lift is generally the most affordable option, starting from around £6,389 for a straightforward domestic specification covering a single step or shallow rise.

What's the difference between a step lift, a platform lift and a home lift?

A step lift covers a single step or shallow rise. An incline platform lift travels along an existing staircase. A through-floor home lift gives full access between two or more floors via a cut opening in the floor.

Can I get a grant for a home platform lift?

Many UK homeowners can apply for the Disabled Facilities Grant, worth up to £30,000 in England and up to £36,000 in Wales. The grant is means-tested and applied for through your local council.

Do I need planning permission for a platform lift at home?

Most domestic platform lifts don't need planning permission, but this can depend on your property and local authority. Your installer can confirm what applies to your specific site.

How long does installation take?

Step lifts are often installed within a day. Incline platform lifts usually take a little longer. Through-floor home lifts take the longest, since they involve cutting a structural opening between floors.
