Can a wheelchair user use an outdoor stairlift?
Not directly. An outdoor stairlift carries a seated user, so anyone using one needs to transfer from their wheelchair onto the stairlift seat. If you need to stay in your wheelchair throughout, an incline platform lift such as the Elevate Glide or Liftak Platform Stairlift is the better option.
What's the difference between a straight and curved outdoor stairlift?
A straight stairlift runs on a single straight rail, suiting a simple flight of steps. A curved stairlift, like the Handicare 4000 Outdoor, uses a twin rail custom-built to follow staircases with bends, landings, or spiral sections.
How much does an outdoor stairlift cost?
Straight outdoor stairlifts typically start from around £2,500. Curved outdoor stairlifts are custom-built to each staircase, so pricing is always quote-only — your installer will confirm the exact cost following a site survey.
What's the maximum weight an outdoor stairlift can carry?
It varies by model, generally in the region of 125-140kg for the straight outdoor stairlifts covered here. If you're close to or above this range, let your installer know so they can recommend a suitable model.
How is an outdoor stairlift powered?
It needs a power supply near the installation point — either fed from the property's existing electrics, or via a dedicated outdoor IP-rated socket fitted by your installer or a qualified electrician.
