The step lift: the usual garage answer
For the classic problem — one or a few steps between an integral garage and the living floor — a step lift is almost always the right call. It is an open vertical platform that raises the wheelchair user straight up over the rise, sized to take a powered chair, and it often needs no structural work because it can be floor-mounted with a ramp onto the platform.

Funding: what help is available, and who qualifies
Two routes may reduce the cost, but neither is automatic and not everyone qualifies.
The Disabled Facilities Grant is council funding for home adaptations. It is means tested for most adult applicants — income and savings are assessed, and many people receive a reduced award or none at all. The means test does not apply where the disabled person is a child. Where a grant is awarded, the mandatory maximum is £30,000 in England, £36,000 in Wales and £25,000 in Northern Ireland, with Scotland running a separate Scheme of Assistance. Zero-rated VAT can remove 20% from a lift installed for a disabled person in a private residence. It is conditional: you sign a declaration of eligibility and your installer confirms the supply qualifies.

Things to check in a garage installation
The exact rise. Measure from the garage floor to the house floor level — it decides the lift type.
Environment. Cold, damp or unheated garages suit a weatherproof or enclosed lift, with drainage if needed.
Space around the car. Make sure the lift and the parked car both fit, with room to manoeuvre a wheelchair.
Power. A standard domestic supply is usually enough; the garage may need a suitable socket or circuit.
The internal door. The threshold and door width at the top of the lift must allow a clean exit into the house.
